Overview

Outdoor Wood Takes a Beating

Decks, fences, pergolas, and railings sit out in the elements year-round. Summer sun fades the wood. Winter ice gets into cracks. Rain and humidity invite mold and rot. A quality stain or paint job is what keeps all of that in check.

Greystone Painting (VA #2705137724) has been finishing and refinishing outdoor wood structures across the Shenandoah Valley since 1996. We know which products hold up here and how to apply them so they last.

What We Do

Decks, Fences, and Everything in Between

Freshly stained wood deck showing rich penetrating finish

Wood Deck Staining

Penetrating stains that soak into the wood and protect it from moisture, UV, and foot traffic. We work with pressure-treated pine, cedar, and exotic hardwoods.

Painted privacy fence with clean uniform finish

Privacy Fence Painting

Solid paint or semi-transparent stain for privacy fences, board-on-board fences, and shadowbox styles. The finish keeps water out and holds up to sun exposure.

Stained pergola with protective UV-resistant finish

Pergola & Arbor Staining

Pergolas and arbors take a beating from direct sun and rain. We apply UV-resistant stains that protect the wood and keep the color from fading.

Refinished deck railing with smooth protective topcoat

Railing Refinishing

Deck railings, porch railings, and baluster systems refinished or repainted. We sand, prime, and apply a durable topcoat that stands up to daily contact.

Your Options

Stain vs. Paint for Outdoor Wood

Stain

Stain soaks into the wood fibers rather than forming a film on top. That means no peeling or chipping down the road. It comes in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid options depending on how much wood grain you want to see. For horizontal deck surfaces that get foot traffic, stain is almost always the better pick.

Paint

Exterior paint gives you unlimited color choices and a solid, opaque finish. It works well on railings, fence pickets, trim, and vertical surfaces where peeling is less of a concern. We use Sherwin-Williams exterior coatings rated for direct weather exposure.

Not sure which is right for your project? We'll look at the wood type, the condition, and what you're going for, then make a recommendation during your free estimate.

Our Process

How We Get It Done

1. Inspection

We walk the deck and check every board, post, and railing. We look for rot, loose fasteners, popped nails, and signs that the old finish has failed. You get a written estimate with no obligation.

2. Surface Prep

Power washing to remove dirt, mildew, and old finish. Sanding rough spots. Replacing damaged boards if needed. The prep is what determines how long the new finish will last.

3. Application

We apply stain or paint using the right method for each surface: brush, roller, or spray. Most projects get two coats. We work with the weather and allow proper drying time between coats.

4. Final Walkthrough

Once everything has cured, we walk through the project with you. We check coverage, touch up any spots, and clean up the work area before we leave.

Materials

Every Type of Outdoor Wood

We work with all common decking and fencing materials in this area. Pressure-treated pine is the most common. Cedar is popular for fences and higher-end decks. We also handle composite materials like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon when the homeowner wants a color change or refresh.

Each material needs a different prep approach and a different product. Pressure-treated lumber needs time to dry before staining. Cedar takes stain beautifully but requires UV protection. Composite needs specialized primers and coatings. We match the product to the wood so the finish performs the way it should.

We use Sherwin-Williams deck stains, solid-color coatings, and exterior paints. These products are rated for direct weather exposure and hold up in Virginia's climate.

Information

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a deck need to be restained in Virginia?
In our climate, most decks need restaining every 2-4 years. South-facing decks that get full sun all day tend to need it more often. Covered or shaded decks can stretch that to 4-5 years. We check the finish during every estimate and let you know where you stand.
Should I stain or paint my deck?
For most decks, stain is the better choice. It penetrates the wood instead of sitting on top, so it doesn't peel or chip the way paint can. Paint works well on railings, trim, and vertical surfaces where foot traffic isn't an issue. We can walk you through the pros and cons for your specific deck.
What's the best time of year for deck and fence work?
Late spring through early fall is ideal. The stain needs dry weather and temperatures above 50 degrees to cure properly. We avoid applying product in direct midday sun or right before rain. Spring and fall are usually the sweet spot in Virginia.
Do you work with composite decking like Trex?
Yes. Composite decking can be painted or stained if the surface is prepped correctly. We clean, lightly sand, and use products formulated for composite materials. It's a different process than natural wood, but the results hold up well.
What affects the cost of deck and fence staining?
The main factors are square footage, condition of the wood, how much prep is needed, and the product you choose. A deck that just needs a fresh coat of stain costs less than one that needs old finish stripped, boards replaced, and full sanding first. We give you a written estimate after seeing the project in person.
How long does a deck staining project take?
A standard-size deck usually takes 2-3 days: one day for cleaning and prep, one for stain application, and a day for drying and a second coat if needed. Larger decks with railings and stairs, or decks that need board repairs, may take 4-5 days. We lay out the timeline before we start.
